About

The inspiration for storage-brain.com was a blog I posted in September 2009.  In that blog, I discussed a radical idea – that data deduplication could actually make storage systems run faster.  I called this idea “The Evolution of the Storage Brain” – the fact that continuous evolution in the intelligence of data storage systems was bringing about new capabilities that would continue far into the future.

As I thought more about this idea of storage intelligence, I realized that the evolution was taking place in every aspect of the design of storage systems, in the storage controllers, in storage communications, in storage virtualization, in storage efficiency, and within the storage devices themselves.  Having witnessed this evolution first-hand over the past 30 years, I decided this was something worth documenting.

In November 2009, my co-writer Michele Hope and I agreed to an audacious goal:  we would write and publish a book called Evolution of the Storage Brain covering every aspect of data storage evolution, and write this book in only 4 months.  During the peak of our writing frenzy we were producing one chapter per week.  Looking back, we must have been crazy to think we could accomplish our goal, but darned if we didn’t do it.  Coupled with a Foreword by InfoStor Editor-In-Chief Dave Simpson, the book was published and became available on Amazon April 1, 2010.  Since publication, the book has gone worldwide, with Kindle and iPad editions available along with the printed edition from 27 distributors in 6 countries.  I am very proud of this accomplishment and encourage you all to read my book and send your comments to this website for further discussion.

Enjoy!
